Chapter 10

Iolani

I let myself take a moment to really admire Zuberi’s masculine beauty. Look, it had been a stressful day. Sometimes a fae just needed to take pleasure in something pretty to lighten the mood. He might be sensitive about his vitiligo, but I thought it was lovely. Striking. I kind of—read, absolutely—wanted to run my fingers over the beautiful black and white patches of exposed skin on his muscular arms and handsome face. His eyes were just as striking, one a warm brown, the other a pretty, almost clear blue. My fingers twitched, wanting to get tangled in his hair, which was cut in a short fade on the sides, but longer on top, with short twists of dark brown hair, and one stunning white patch.

He glanced at me and narrowed his eyes. “What? Why you looking at me like that, kraken? Something on my face?” He rubbed his cheek with his real hand, the prosthetic one relaxed at his side. Even that was attractive—the way he moved with that powerful confidence, as if the prosthetic limb was a part of him.

I grinned. “Can I pet you, Twinkles? I’ve never petted a unicorn before.”

He snorted, compressing his plush lips for a second before he replied. “Could you just focus, woman? I thought you wanted to look for energy damage. Not play petting zoo.”

I waggled my brows at him. “Ooh...petting zoo. Sounds kinky. But I’m up for role play.”

He let out an exasperated sigh. “Fuck’s sake,” he muttered. Then he stopped and held out his arms. “Fine. Go ahead. Pet me, if it will get you to shut the fuck up.”

I pouted. “But I want to see your unicorn.”

He narrowed his eyes at me. “Is that another innuendo? Cause I swear to fuck—”

I reached out and patted his head, pausing to stroke the soft, springy ropes of his hair. “Ooh...so nice.”

He growled at me.

I grinned. “I don’t think unicorns growl. I think they just prance, and sparkle, and make those little whale noises.”

He ducked out from under my hand before I could pet his neck, where there was a particularly nice white and black stripe. “Fuck off. Whale noises?”

I nodded. “Yeah, you know, like that ancient human movie with the unicorns, and the goblins, and the demon? They sounded like whales in that one.”

He rubbed a hand over his face as if he was at his wit’s end. I ignored this and looped my arm through his, wrapping myself around his prosthetic. If he wanted to escape, he was going to have to leave his arm behind.

He looked down slightly, into my eyes, his face serious, eyes intent. “I hate you with every fiber of my being.”

I grinned at him. “Aww...that’s so sweet, devoting your entire being to me. You can join my cult. I’ll allow it.”

He shook his head. “Sometimes...I think you’re this intelligent, competent, powerful EPA agent with like, this big, scary, infamous family and shit. But then you talk, and I remember...you’re just an idiot.”

I squeezed his arm tighter.
